Ross’s constellation hit a snag of its own when her neighbour who owns the Campeau Drive hedgerow on which the stars were displayed asked her to find another home for them. The weight of the string was breaking its branches, Ross explained, while the twice-annual maintenance on the hedges required the string’s repeated removal and replacement. She has yet to find a suitable place to display them. And so the stars are, for the time being at least, kept in a bag in her home.
“When I make the stars, I’m thinking about who I’m making it for,” says Ross, who never imagined her string would reach this far. “You don’t have names. It’s not like going into a cemetery where there’s a name that you can approach. It’s a very sad situation.”
