'Our standard has significantly shifted from how we operate, and we are never going back,' says Pam Martin-McDonald, whose road to recovery and finding herself again started by setting boundaries and learning to say no.

“My biggest motivator to keep picking away at it was my kids. They needed me and were like my guiding light when I felt like my depression was so bad, I was losing so much weight, and even my hearing was going. I was just getting by; when I saw them and they would say, 'Momma, we love you' or 'Momma, what's wrong.' I felt I had to be strong for them, I also needed to be strong for myself, but they are who got me going.
“It has shifted incredibly,” said Martin-McDonald. “I would say some shifts happened quicker than others, but they all add up. I have grown and stepped into valuing myself and being able to speak calmly and clearly."Part of that was learning to communicate better, she explains. “I was working with a coach at the time and she had asked me what's something you want to do,” said George.
"She challenged me that day, and I started writing that day. It became therapy to write down my whole life story, what I did, and all the tools and tricks I have learned over the years to bounce back, I wrote this book for my own good.”George is a retired fire chief and served 24 years in his community, though it was mid-2020 when he began experiencing burnout.
