Mark Giordano voted Maple Leafs' Masterton nominee by Toronto chapter of PHWA
“I have always said, especially as a defenceman, if your coach can trust you to play against the top players on the other team, you’re going to get minutes, so I’ve taken a lot of pride in that,” Giordano said. “As you get older, you know there is going to be guys who are young and if they’re offensive guys who play on the power play, you might not get those offensive situations anymore.”
In 77 games through the weekend, Giordano averaged 18 minutes 58 seconds a game with the Leafs, serving as a stalwart defensively and on the penalty kill. He also has four goals and 20 assists.In February, the rugged Giordano set an NHL record when he blocked a shot for the 2,045th time. Earlier in April, he played in his 1,100th NHL game.
Given a choice, he would play in every game, but recently was rested by coach Sheldon Keefe for load management.Article content“Over the years, I’ve become a smarter player with my reads and stuff, not expending so much energy,” Giordano said. “And it took me a while to get here .“I take a lot of pride in that. I love the game still, I love coming to the rink. It’s easy to put the work in when you really enjoy it.
“If you’re good defensively, you last a lot longer in the league. You see that throughout time and that’s what I’m trying to do.”
