Maple Leafs sign U of T goalie Jett Alexander to back up in home finale:
Tight against the salary cap, the Leafs didn’t have the financial means to recall goalie Joseph Woll from the Toronto Marlies.
A factor is the Leafs’ desire to sign forward Matthew Knies, whose season with the University of Minnesota will end on Saturday night with his team’s participation in the NCAA’s Frozen Four championship game in Tampa against Quinnipiac University.Article contentLeafs coach Sheldon Keefe said on Saturday morning that there had been initial thought that Matt Murray could back up Samsonov.
In using one NHL goalie on Saturday, the Leafs will get the cap relief to recall Woll on an emergency basis for their final three games of the regular season, all on the road. The Leafs have been down a similar road before. In October 2021, the club signed goalie Alex Bishop, also from the U of T, to back up Jack Campbell for a game after Petr Mrazek got hurt. That night, the Leafs didn’t have to use Bishop as Campbell made 21 saves in a 3-1 win against the Ottawa Senators.
Luckily for the Leafs, the game against the Canadiens has no impact in the standings, as Toronto has locked up second place in the Atlantic Division, giving them home-ice advantage in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
