SAINT PAUL, Minn. — The Ottawa Senators came out flat and unfortunately their drought in the State of Hockey continued.
Trying to close the gap to get back into the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference, the Senators can’t afford to let any points slip away. They came into this game seven points behind the New York Islanders for the final wild-card spot.Article content
“It just wasn’t good enough,” said Senators coach D.J. Smith. “We came out flat. We shot ourselves in the foot in the second period and that’s something we hadn’t been doing by turning pucks over. If you stay with it long enough and you don’t turn pucks over, maybe in the third period you get a point out of this.
“If I get news that one of them , that’d be great. But we’ve just got to keep doing what we’re doing,” Smith said. Kastelic broke Gustavsson’s bid for a shutout at 4:56 of the third to cut the Wild’s comfortable-looking lead to 3-1. Kastelic was able to tip one by Gustavsson after Ottawa did a good job getting some pressure in the Minnesota end.
Jared Spurgeon completed a perfect passing play by backhanding it by Forsberg in alone at 9:27 to give the Wild a 3-0 lead. The Senators can’t afford to let the opposition go untouched to the net and there was no sense Ottawa was going to come back in this one.Article content
