In new job, Fraser will oversee expenditures for $50-million venture capital fund
Malcolm Fraser plans to focus on “Canadian companies that develop naturally derived biologically based solutions that benefit people, animals and the planet.” - ContributedPeople like Malcolm Fraser don’t stay unemployed for long.
“We’re connected with Natural Products Canada, which has offices across the country,” Fraser said in an interview. “I’ve been aware of Natural Products Canada, and the fact they had a fund in development, in my previous role at Innovacorp. Robert Orr, who’s the chair of Natural Products Canada, was instrumental in getting the fund up and running.
“Obviously the big one is Meta Materials, which was an incredible exit for that fund, won Deal of the Year in Canada last year. A huge achievement for Innovacorp and Atlantic Canada, to see that type of return happen,” said Fraser, who also mentioned work with CarbonCure and TruLeaf as especially significant. “And the team is doing a fabulous job there, engaging and developing companies at the early stage, and then providing capital when they’re ready to scale.
“Natural Products Canada is really focused on developing and commercializing these companies that are creating biological solutions to replacing synthetics in our food and health systems. Consumer demand is driving it; you want a healthier product to eat, you want it to have less chemicals in it. The fertilizer that’s used to grow the food needs less chemicals in it. The demand for finding healthier alternatives to products we would normally consume is high.
