'Smoke concentrations may vary widely across the region as winds and temperatures change, and as wildfire behaviour changes,' warned Metro Vancouver in an air quality advisory.
The unrelenting wildfire smoke is back again, triggering an air quality advisory for British Columbia's eastern Fraser Valley Thursday afternoon. A spokesperson for Metro Vancouver said much of the smoke has drifted in from wildfires burning near Chilliwack Lake, Hope, Harrison Lake and across the border in Washington.
Elsewhere in Metro Vancouver, the smoke could create hazy conditions as stagnant weather conditions are expected to persist for several days, warned Metro Vancouver. People with lung disease, respiratory infections, COPD, asthma and diabetes face elevated risk when exposed to the fine particles, but so do pregnant women, children, seniors, outdoor workers and people who are unhoused.
The number of active wildfires in the province had climbed to 205 as of Thursday, a spike of 17 new fires in the past two days, according to the BC Wildfire Service. What’s different this time around is a stubborn high-pressure system that has crept up from the south and established itself over the province.
