The New York\u002Dbased guitarist begins a tour that will bring his freewheeling sextet to Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon, Toronto and Ottawa.
Operator is to be released Friday, in conjunction with the Edmonton-to-Ottawa tour. It would have been dropped sooner, except for the global health crisis that put so much of everyone’s lives on hold for so long.Q: Tell me about your first strong connections with music. When did music first make aA: My earliest childhood memory is of me dancing around the living room as my older sister played piano. My parents wanted us to learn classical music. At the time we were house-poor.
At first I didn’t believe it was possible. But then I started learning about all the players on the album and the improvisational concepts associated with jazz and I was instantly hooked. I saw the possibilities, and even though traditional jazz really didn’t do it for me at the time I realized there was so much I could learn from it. Around this time I started studying with John Pelosi who gave me an understanding of harmony and theory as it applies to improvising through a guitar.
While there is a lot of written material, I have always encouraged everyone in the band to take ownership over any aspect of the tune that speaks to them. There are general roles, but once we get going anything is fair game, and the more the musicians feel comfortable with the material, the more we tend to melt and bend things.Article content
One of the things she had always wanted for me was to complete a Master’s degree and I felt I was ready to take on some heavier studying. So I applied to a few graduate programs. I still return home to Toronto three to four times a year to see family, friends and often play a few shows. My long-running Toronto-based project Avi Granite 6 is about to release our new album, Operator. I guess since New York City is only about an hour flight from Toronto it feels like I can kind of have the best of both worlds.
