“DFO’s initial assessments are that 133 of the 180 harbours in the storm’s path suffered damage to breakwaters, wharves and electric systems,” Murray told a small group of reporters Oct. 17."In many of these harbours, the sediment and extreme coastal erosion mean they will need to be dredged so fishing and boating can happen again."
Several buildings on the Covehead harbour were destroyed in post-tropical storm Fiona while fishing gear such as traps were also washed out to sea. -Stu Neatby - Stu Neatby Murray also said another $130 million allocation remained from a $300 million allocation for small harbour repairs from the 2021 federal budget.
Speaking to reporters, Molly Aylward, executive director of the P.E.I. Fishermen’s Association, said rebuilt harbours will need to be more “climate resilient” in the face of harsher storms in the future.
