Russell-King’s High and Splendid Braveries looks at Murphy’s life and career over three decades. It is a historical drama laced with irony, sarcasm, wit and humour so it is as entertaining as it is enlightening and insightful. It’s 100 rapid-fire minutes of pure theatre. Laberge plays only Murphy, but the other four actors play 30 characters, and this is what makes the play so captivating as they weave in and out of various personas. Martina Laird-Westib, who plays McKinney, also becomes an Anglican archbishop and then the doctor who treated Murphy and her children, and helped Murphy understand how addicts smoked or injected opium.Article content
Ginette Simonot is Parlby but she also plays Murphy’s young daughter, several of the prostitutes and addicts who are brought to Murphy’s courtroom. She is also Princess Poppy, the physicalizing of opium which is highly dramatic, especially when Murphy needs opium to ease her pain after a life-threatening operation and Simonot envelops Laberge in her arms with a red scarf.
