StarEditorial: At a time when city services are at risk, Toronto residents aren’t served by Ottawa’s fiscal finger-pointing.
After all, this week’s promise of federal funding for Toronto, some $349 million, towards the purchase of 340 electric buses and chargers is important.
That’s not to say the city’s current financial crisis should sidetrack smart investments like this one. But at the same time, such announcements can’t be made with rose-coloured glasses that ignore pressing fiscal realities. The budget gap this year is estimated at just over $1 billion and includes $366 million for transit, $317 million for shelters and $87 million for public health.
, no doubt to the frustration of those commuters fuming after a long wait for a ride only to have a packed vehicle arrive at a stop.
