StarEditorial: Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney should take immediate steps to make sure that Toronto residents get proper answers about the state of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT.
It seems some mysteries may confound us forever due to the passage of time, like the fates of Amelia Earhart and Jimmy Hoffa, the rumours of pirate gold on Oak Island and the sailing ship Mary Celeste and her missing crew.
And some things are a mystery because of the obstinate, inexcusable refusal of politicians to be up front.This is a modern-day curiosity. It seems, after all, to have the ingredients needed for a functioning rapid transit line. There are tracks and overhead wires that provide power. There are newly constructed stations, 25 in all along its 19-kilometre stretch. We know there are working train cars to move commuters, thanks to a demonstration for journalists in October, 2021.
And yet, deadlines have come and gone and this $13-billion project has still not carried a paying passenger. Maddeningly, neither Metrolinx, the agency responsible for overseeing the project, nor the province, has deigned to explain the delays, provide an updated timetable for its completion or release a revised budget.
