Sports leagues’ eyes lit up like slot machines at the millions it would bring in advertising; casinos and their employees were delighted; sports betting companies saw a new multi-billion dollar market opened to them provincial governments would cash in on a new revenue stream; and everyday sports gamblers, for years forced to parlay bets, could finally legally bet on single games.Article content
Betting sites declare that users must be 19 or older and caution them to “always bet responsibly,” but anyone with a debit or credit card and the resourcefulness to lie about their age can sign up. Celebrity endorsements by the likes of NHLers Connor McDavid certainly don’t deter young adults from gambling.
“If gambling starts to take root and is what they see when they watch sports — and sports are everywhere, and now gambling in sports is everywhere, and the two tend to be married together — it’s really hard to separate them.” Further, a 2007 study for the Quebec government indicated that ads portraying gambling as fun, social and risk-free made four out of 10 youths and adolescents want to try. Given the current ubiquity of gambling ads, it’s difficult to imagine that that number is any lower now.Article content
