Chatbots won't replace doctors. But a new study found ChatGPT outperformed doctors in providing 'empathetic' advice to patients
The pandemic-driven surge in virtual and Zoom care has also caused a surge in electronic patient messages. Doctors are responding by limiting responses, billing for responses or delegating responses to less trained support staff, the researchers wrote in“What’s the other side of that funnel,” said Dr. John Ayers, the study’s lead author and vice chief of innovation in the UC San Diego School of Medicine division of infectious disease and global public health.
But artificial empathy isn’t real empathy, and bioethicists are cautious about exactly what role AI should have incare. Should written responses from real doctors come with an “assisted by robot” disclosure? Or would people, as an accompanying commentary suggests, gladly reach out to an imperfect, non-human bot “when it’s available 24/7 for immediate response in a way that a constrained health-care workforce cannot be.
The new study is based on 195 randomly drawn exchanges from Reddit’s AskDocs, which lists roughly 474,000 members, and where users can post medical questions, and verified health-care professionals submit their answers. Arthur Caplan certainly challenges the notion a robot is somehow more “empathetic” than a real doctor. It’s also not clear who is responsible if something goes wrong — a misdiagnosis, say. “A lot of health care still involves judgment and interpretation,” said Caplan, head of the division of medical ethics at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine in New York City.
