Halifax's Capella Regalis Men & Boys Choir performs a special SchutzFest 350 concert on Sunday, Nov. 6 at Cathedral Church of All Saints, with the cathedral choir and special guest soloists. The concert marks the 350th anniversary of the death of early Baroque composer Heinrich Schutz with a performance of his pioneering requiem Musiklische Exequien.- ContributedHALIFAX, N.S.
Guest soloists include Montreal bass William Kraushaar, Ottawa tenor Andrew Walker, organist Dr. Neil Cockburn, Hilary Brown on baroque cello and Montreal’s Madeleine Owen playing theorbo, a plucked string instrument of the lute family. The requiem is in three movements, scored for five-part to eight-part chorus and small ensembles of solo voices and instruments. Schutz was renowned for incorporating the Italian influence of his teacher Gabrieli as well as Monteverdi into his composition, melding their flourishes with a 16th-century Germanic style in a way that would influence generations of composers that followed, from J.S. Bach to Brahms.
