The Harris’s sparrow is an attractive bird that nests along the treeline of the boreal forest in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. It spends the winter in the Central Plains of the United States, including the state of Oklahoma and west Texas. By the way, before you think you have a Harris’s sparrow at your bird feeder, check the bird books carefully to make sure it is not the common everyday house sparrow. Both the male house sparrow and Harris’s sparrow have a similarly shaped black patch on the front of its face.
Anyone walking the Rennies River trail can see the two winter gems with a little patience. Both birds enjoy the grape jelly kept in a little plastic dish hung from a large willow tree, but they also vary their diet with the offerings of peanut butter, suet and freeze-dried mealworms. They have gotten through some pretty cold nights so far.Farther up the Rennies River, a northern mockingbird ekes out a living in the hedges of several backyards backing off of Roche Street.
