City says enough staff have now stepped up to help in Monday’s vote, which takes place amid concerns from South Asian community about overlap with Diwali.

The City of Brampton issued an urgent plea for staff to help with Monday’s municipal election in the wake of an “unprecedented number” of election worker resignations and training no-shows.

Brown said Brampton, along with Mississauga, officially objected to this election date as it falls on Diwali — an important date he likened to Christmas — and folks who observe it may want to spend time with their families instead of heading to the polls. But he said the provincial response was that there is legislation that fixes the date for municipal elections.

“We are shocked and dismayed at the lack of organization on the part of the City of Brampton,” read a statement from Kaur about the city’s appeal for election workers. “The city should have anticipated Diwali on Monday” and been better prepared.
