There are 11 open races for seats on council — not even including the first mayor’s race without an incumbent in nearly two decades — and a handful of incumbents are facing tough fights for re-election. From the west end to the east and from rural areas to the city’s core, there are fascinating races taking shape in every corner of the city. Here are some of the most intriguing races to watch for election night.

But a rift developed in the relationship before the 2018 municipal election. Thompson supported another candidate, Jay Tysick, who lost. Darouze picked up almost 55 per cent of the vote. Thompson has drawn attention to a 2019 city integrity commissioner’s investigation after Darouze emailed the chief of police to complain about social media posts by a police officer’s wife who had criticized deployment decisions for the Osgoode area. The commissioner concluded that Darouze’s major motivation was to “bully and intimidate” the couple in the hopes that the Faceboook commentary would be erased.

Troster, who has worked with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities for the past five years, may have the inside lane, after receiving endorsements from both McKenney and third-party organization/advertiser Horizon Ottawa. Like Troster, MacKay cites housing, and homelessness, as the ward’s main issue, noting the need for more affordable rental housing, as well as suitable housing for young families. He also sees a need for more supportive housing to deal with chronic homelessness and give people what he calls “the dignity of a closed door.”

Given this year’s crowded field and the traditionally low voter turnout in municipal elections — it was 37.5 per cent in Rideau-Vanier in 2018 — a candidate will likely be able to secure the seat by gaining just a few thousand votes. Rideau-Vanier has a host of other issues, including the question of how to remove interprovincial truck traffic from King Edward Avenue. A joint study by the city and province said a diversion tunnel for the traffic could be built for $2 billion, but there remains no resolution on how to pay for the project.
