With an election less than a year away and public resentment growing about the government's performance in the aftermath of post-tropical storm Fiona, the ...

The provincial election is less than a year away, and while Premier Dennis King, right, continues to ride high in the polls, the opposition parties must be feeling confident they have some ammunition to work with, given what has happened over the last several months, writes columnist Andy Walker.

While Premier King continues to ride high in the polls, the opposition parties must be feeling confident they have some ammunition to work with, given what has happened over the last several months. The province's inflation rate continues to be among the highest in the country; gasoline and furnace oil prices continue to rise and are significantly higher than the other two Maritime provinces. On Oct. 12 for example, Islanders were paying $1.

Then there was the controversy surrounding the distribution of $250 in relief money the province asked the Red Cross to distribute. The money was to go to anybody who suffered damage during the hurricane , while other programs were intended to be more targeted. Many people did get the help online relatively quickly but for others who either applied over the phone or had trouble confirming their identity with the Red Cross, the process was much more complicated.

Then there was the announcement just before the storm that the Island Regulatory and Appeals Agency would allow landlords toon heated units by 10.8 per cent next year. Usually, such hikes are in the range of one to three per cent. The commission argued the increases are justified, due to high fuel prices. The commission also sets those prices and they are currently out of whack with the rest of the region, so maybe their regulatory rule has to be re-examined.
