“That’s the thing with statistics, they can vary from month to month and year to year,” MacLeod said. But, she said, the biggest things that play a role in pedestrian safety are speed reductions and infrastructure design, such as how roads are built, if there are sidewalks and how they are maintained, and if pedestrians get a walk signal before traffic gets a green light.

That means adding pedestrian islands halfway across wide roads, for example, to provide safe spaces for people on foot to stop.“It’s not one or the other that is more at fault but, regardless, the pedestrian is not going to win versus a car, so there is more onus on drivers to be the ones to slow their speeds down, drive the speed limit, obey the lights,” she said.
