Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board launches new three-year mental health plan
The critical need to address mental health concerns among elementary and high school students remains acute, even after things are getting back to normal as COVID lockdowns disappear.
Lambert said some students are suffering from anxiety, depression, unable to function properly in the classroom due to family troubles or feeling socially isolated after being in COVID lockdowns. “The biggest factor that can really tell us where a student is at is feelings of hopelessness, having no hope for the future and that comes across in what they tell us when they’re talking about their problems.”
The H-SCDSB is encouraging teachers to be on the lookout for signs of mental health troubles in students, approach them and initiate help from a board counsellor. As part of the board’s new three-year mental health plan, there are plans to hire one new counsellor to help with student mental health needs in the board’s northern communities, including Wawa, White River, Hornepayne and Chapleau.
