Carter Felker – Even the Happy Ones are Sad
Fans of Calgary singer-songwriter Carter Felker’s Sunday morning brunch jams at the King Eddy will recognize some of the memorable melodies that service these well-crafted murder ballads, cautionary tales and wry character studies. Sad? Yes, but undeniably beautiful.One of the country’s best-kept secrets, Calgary’s Ghostkeeper hunkered down at OCL Studios with producer Lorrie Matheson to record a follow-up to their 2017 concept record, Sheer Blouse Buffalo Knocks.
Classically-trained Calgary singer-songwriter Laura Hickli’s mesmerizing baroque-pop songs, elegant delivery and innate musicality tend to cast a delicate mist over the listener, but her sophomore effort is also a powerful statement about release and overcoming trauma that makes for a spellbinding and often heart-wrenching journey. It was offered as a split release with Naturally by 36?, a band led by Hickli’s partner Taylor Cochrane.
