Randy Bullerwell has rekindled a competitive spirit and enjoyed immediate success in a new sport. The Yarmouth man was seeking a means of staying active when he discovered race walking but his involvement in the sport has resulted in other benefits as well. CONTRIBUTEDYARMOUTH, NS – One Yarmouth retiree has found a unique and challenging way to keep himself active while scratching a competitive itch.
After retiring, Bullerwell sought a new means of staying active, especially after gaining some extra weight during COVID isolation.“I was in Aruba at the time and there was a 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. curfew. I was walking every day,” he says. “But that got as boring as heck so I tried power walking and that was boring as well.”“I realized that when I had been at other competitions, I was one of the ones who laughed at the race walkers,” he says.
With his competitive drive still intact, Bullerwell decided to test his newfound skills in races, entering his first one on Sept. 11.Randy Bullerwell is shown during his first competition as a race walker where he won a Canadian Masters title. CONTRIBUTED“It was surprisingly nerve-racking but it was so good to be racing. It was so good to be stepping on that starting line. It brought back so many different kinds of memories. I was just worried I was going to start off running,” he jokes.
This early morning activity presents an opportunity for Bullerwell, an avid photographer , to watch the world emerge from darkness during his workouts.The collection of images capturing early morning light has also led to Bullerwell to begin the process of self-publishing a photography book: Intimate Dawns.
