Alejandro Cárdenas, left, his wife Joanna Batavia and their two daughters: “It’s been a few years, but we’re seeing there’s lot of joy in seeing people coming together.” IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POSTSYDNEY — Santa Claus and a merry band of floats succeeded to satisfy several hundreds who braved the cold to catch the first moving yuletide parade in three years roll through downtown Sydney and Whitney Pier on Sunday.
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, and the provincial state of emergency that followed, meant that moving parades in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality were either cancelled outright due to public health restrictions, or reimagined as stationary or standing parades as a preventive measure. Last year, only Glace Bay and Port Hawkesbury successfully ran moving parades.
Due to parade rules, participants are no longer allowed to leave the parade route during the procession as doing so poses a health and safety risk. And as Barron previously told the Cape Breton Post, many people she spoke with expressed concern that a seven-kilometre route between Sydney and Whitney Pier might have been too long to do in one go.
Daryan Briggs from Ashby, with her son, Blue."I’ve been waiting years to see it come through again." IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POST - IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POST“I was so upset to hear originally it wasn’t going to be included,” said Woodberry, referring to the controversy that ensued in mid-November when the Sydney parade group unveiled its initial route that didn’t include the Pier. “It started in Whitney Pier and it was a tradition here forever.
Whitney Pier's Destiny Woodberry:"I’m just so glad that everyone sat down, talked about it, and it was headed back into the Pier." IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POST - IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POSTBarron, for her part, said she’s very relieved to have the parade go through without any glitches in her initial attempts and is looking forward to organizing future Santa Claus parades.
