Bounou, 31, was outstanding in a 1\u002D0 win against Portugal at the Al Thumama Stadium on Saturday.

“All the players on the pitch were fantastic and when someone thinks of a Moroccan player from now on, they will know they can play at the highest levels. This is what made me very proud, because my teammates performed very well.”

Bounou was born in Montreal, but his parents moved to Casablanca, Morocco when he was a toddler. He went on to play for the local club Wydad Casablanca before moving to Spain to play with Atletico Madrid. He is currently with Sevilla, joining the club on loan in 2019 and then transferred the following season.Article content

For the second consecutive game, Ronaldo started on the bench for Portugal, in favour of 21-year-old forward Goncalo Ramos, who scored three goals in a 6-1 win against Switzerland in the previous round. Canada is the only team to have scored against Morocco in the tournament as cross from Sam Adekugbe deflected in off defender Nayef Aguerd. Atiba Hutchinson also hit the underside of the crossbar with a header off a corner late in the 2-1 loss and it bounced on the back of the goal line.Article content

Portugal head coach Fernando Santos was not happy with Ronaldo’s reaction after seeing it on video after the game and sat his star, but claimed the move was for tactical reasons, and not disciplinary.
