The first time Lyra Evans and Shannon Boschy were in stark opposition, they each carried signs during a heated public demonstration last October outside two schools in Ottawa\u0027s Highland Park neighbourhood.
Last week, Boschy spoke at a small downtown Ottawa rally organized by the Christian political organization Action4Canada, which on its website says it is “devoted to making Canada great again” while addressing issues including abortion, “political LGBTQ,” and “political Islam.” He was on a slate of speakers denouncing sexual orientation and gender identity in Canada’s schools. His speech followed Maxime Bernier, leader of the right-wing populist People’s Party of Canada.
He has a 19-year-old son who disagrees. Andy Boschy says he came out as trans three years ago. He and his father have been estranged since he began taking hormones in the summer of 2021. “Shannon Boschy contends his child’s transition and hardships in life stem from school experience. “My daughter’s not trans,” he says. “I don’t believe that.”Like Andy Boschy, Lyra Evans came out as trans in her late teen years. Evans was once homeless and living in shelters, mostly in Ottawa.
Evans and Shannon Boschy have yet to engage in a public debate, though both say they would welcome one. This month, they were in the same room only twice for meet-and-greets with constituents in Manor Park and Sandy Hill. Anti-LGBTQ activist groups in the U.S., U.K. and Canada have grown more vocal, she says, “pushing against critical race theory, despite it not being taught in schools, and pushing against woke ideology.”
The survey asked candidates to comment on the statement: “White supremacy is a major systemic issue in Ontario schools today.” Evans strongly agreed. Boschy strongly disagreed. Asked if “school boards should direct teaching staff to provide extra attention and classroom supports to students based upon race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, and other immutable characteristics,” Boschy strongly disagreed. Evans strongly agreed.Article content
