With three wild cards in play, the 2023 Scotties Tournament of Hearts and Brier could include the strongest fields ever in Canadian curling

Both Bottcher and Carruthers will get into the Brier as wild cards. The third wild card team will be skipped by Karsten Sturmay, who finished fourth in the Alberta playdowns and is ranked sixth in CTRS. He narrowly edged out Ontario’s John Epping.Article content

Team Carruthers made it to the Manitoba final despite only having three players — Carruthers, second/third Derek Samagalski and lead/second Connor Njegovan. The team parted ways with third Jason Gunnlaugson back in December and was not able to find a suitable replacement for the provincial championship.Article content

“Rob is Connor’s cousin, sweeps on the same side as Connor,” Carruthers said. “He’s a great fit for us.”Photo by DAVID BLOOMOverall, the Brier field includes 10 of the top 20 teams in the CTRS standings. Northern Ontario’s Tanner Horgan, Ontario’s Mike McEwen, B.C.’s Jacques Gauthier, Quebec’s Felix Asselin and Saskatchewan’s Kelly Knapp should all push for spots in the championship round along with the likes of Dunstone, Gushue, Bottcher, Koe, Carruthers and Sturmay.

Things got interesting when Lawes was allowed to add free-agent Alberta curler Laura Walker to her team’s lineup as a replacement for eight-months pregnant third Selena Njegovan.Article contentHowever, an exemption was granted by Curling Canada to the Lawes team specifically because it is in the top-five in the women’s CTRS standings . The same ruling would not apply to any team outside the top five.

Members of the Lawes team, including Njegovan, were among the most vocal people in opposing the original Curling Canada ruling and that left Walker feeling proud to be a part of such a foursome.
