“As we were looking at the criteria, we realized we’re not as bird-friendly as we thought,” said Deborah Doherty, the co-chair of the Ottawa Bird Team, a group of about 10 wildlife organizations, businesses and individuals spearheading the application for certification. If a municipality doesn’t have a bylaw, it can still get points for raising public awareness about the dangers of allowing cats to roam outside, said Doherty. Ottawa recently launched a social media campaign, so points there.
The National Capital Commission has incorporated design principles into new and refurbished buildings.
