InTheirOwnVoices: While I didn’t advocate for myself in that moment, I do now. In fact, I speak up about my stuttering and my needs in nearly every job interview and at every workplace.
The hiring manager casually uttered these words to me after telling me “I see here on your resume that you have a speech disability” in the middle of a job interview.
For people with disabilities, facing discrimination during the recruitment process is not uncommon. Last year, thefound that one in four Canadians with disabilities have experienced workplace discrimination at some point during their career. So, the silver lining was that I wasn’t alone in my dreadful experience.
“So I see that a lot of your experience is in marketing,” he said. “You know this is a sales position, right?” As I commuted home from the interview by TTC, I started to reflect more on the incident. I felt my anger starting to dissipate as I processed what had just happened. If anything, the incident acted as a filter because I wouldn’t want to work at a place like that anyways.
