Politics This Morning: Canada prepares to host UN conference as doubts linger about visasPolitics This Morning: Canada prepares to host UN conference as doubts linger about visasGood Friday morning, Prime Minister JUSTIN TRUDEAU will be in Vancouver today to meet with new British Columbia Premier DAVID EBY. Trudeau and Eby will join Families Minister KARINA GOULD for a press conference to highlight the child care agreement between B.C. and Ottawa. Meanwhile in Montreal, senior officials from Environment and Climate Change Canada will hold a technical briefing at 10 a.m. local time regarding Canada’s priorities as the host of COP15. In longhand, that’s the 15th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, which is scheduled to run from Dec. 7 to 19. A department press release described this as the largest international nature conference in a generation, with “thousands of delegates from around the world.” Environment Minister STEVEN GUILBEAULT, who spent most of November in Egypt for the UN climate conference, will play host in Montreal. But the Canadian Press has reported that advocates are concerned about a repeat of visa problems that prevented many African delegates from attending the International AIDS Society Conference in Montreal in July. The organizers of that conference issued an open letter to Trudeau at the time to express “deep disappointment at Canada’s decision to deny hundreds of registered delegates entry to the country,” and to say that excluding delegates from the countries most affected by HIV was “a blow to the global HIV community’s efforts.” Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada has since told the Canadian Press it found no no fault in its handling of visa applications for the July conference and suggested that the delegates might have botched their applications. Meanwhile, advocates point to systemic problems within the visa system, which could also affect this month’s biodiversity conference.
