Into the high stakes poker game that is Alberta politics comes a wild card. Maybe even something of a joker.It could play a significant role in the outcome of the May 29 election, though perhaps not in the way many people think.
It has made headlines by flooding UCP nomination meetings to elect TBA-friendly candidates and last fall managed to get nine TBA-supported candidates to the UCP’s 18-member provincial board. The founder of TBA, David Parker, says he’s hoping to one day have all 18 members aligned with his organization.
The right-wing group has become such a headline-grabber that more than a few Albertans are getting nervous, not just New Democrats, but United Conservatives who think TBA will frighten moderate Conservatives away from the party. Parker, 33, lives in Red Deer. He knows a thing or two about organizing political movements. He says he was a staffer for a decade with Stephen Harper and was national director of field operations for Erin O’Toole. Parker even helped organize Jason Kenney’s successful UCP leadership campaign in 2017. He was a Kenney supporter until the pandemic hit. Parker thought Kenney went too far with restrictions.
