Former Kentville teacher Miss Ida Austin taught students about the power of giving back to those who are less fortunate. An Edmonton businessman makes a difference every Christmas. Bedford Williams, the owner of H&W Produce Millwoods, partners every DecemberWilliams, who hails from the Kentville area, has said he contributes this way because of Miss Ida Austin’s inspiration.“She was someone who continuously gave back to her students by ensuring we had food in our stomachs.

“I was in the parking lot of the Mabou grocery store and chatting with a tall, thin, elderly gentleman. Come to find out he was from Skye Glen. I told him I knew Ida Austin from Skye Glen. He was her nephew and he told me of her kindness, how when he was a wee boy Aunt Ida bought him his first bicycle one summer. Like anyone who knew her, his heart was full whenever he remembered her. I was in tears listening to him talking about her.

What a legacy one caring teacher can create. The tale of Miss Austin’s food hampers made me think of the Buy Nothing movement, which was started by a group of Mennonites in Western Canada in 2001. Buy Nothing Christmas is rooted in anti-consumerism, a direct pushback to the frenzy of shopping in big box stores and Black Friday sales that dominate the holiday season.

The coming holiday season could likely be one of the most expensive in recent memory. I paid $100 for a free-range turkey already.
