INGONISH — Heavy spring snow and some synthetic flakes are offering the best skiing conditions of the season at Cape Breton’s largest ski facilities.

Both Ski Ben Eoin and Ski Cape Smokey are enjoying extended spring openings, as a result, after suffering through later than usual starts to the season because of warm and wet winter weather.

However, when extra ski days through April are factored in, the current ski season will have offered more days to ski than last season. As is the case most years at Ski Ben Eoin, March break was time for the facility’s year-end bash. However, that wasn’t the end of the season this year after spring snowfalls extended the season another week through April 2. CONTRIBUTED-FACEBOOK - CONTRIBUTEDThe extended season at Smokey has also been aided by a modern snowmaking system that produces snow in marginal temperatures, a system that might very well extend future seasons by months.

Supply chain issues kept more of these guns from arriving on Smokey from Europe, which could have meant an even earlier start to their season if they had arrived on time.
