From joe_warmington: At 101, this veteran enjoys each day but never forgets those who fell RemembranceDay
That said, he also came back from war and built an incredible life for himself and his family. He worked at the old Woodbine Racetrack in the Beaches, where he was also famous for being a crossing guard at Queen and Woodbine.“But growing up he never talked about the war,” she said. But thanks to the work of Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders commanding officer Lt. Col. Carlo C. Tittarelli, Honourary Col. Glenn Gibson and historian Lt. Cmdr.
“I had no experience but it was war,” Tony told Argyll historians of enlisting in 1940 in Hamilton with the Dufferin and Haldimand Rifles of Canada. “I joined because I thought it was my duty to do so. I was proud to be a soldier in the Canadian Army.”And as he heads to his 102nd birthday next May, daughter Laura said he’s doing great. He enjoys his life.“He’s eating a piece of cherry pie right now,” she said with a chuckle. “He’s healthy and happy.
Part of that she attributes to the veteran’s ward at Sunnybrook which “does a wonderful job” in caring for these heroes. There is so much history in that place and it’s because of those veterans that Canadians enjoy a free life.“If something needed to be done, you just did it,” is Tony’s motto. When I thanked Tony for his part in liberating the Netherlands and Europe and ensuring prosperity in Canada, he reminded he never forgets the fallen.
