The world\u0027s largest automaker selected the small community south of London, Ont. as a new battery plant.
The company also announced it was scouting a site in South Carolina. A senior Volkswagen board member said it was about expanding their reach in North America.
No details of any financial deal with the company were announced on Monday, but the federal and provincial governments paid billions last year to attract other battery companies and electric vehicle announcements. Last year, the two governments confirmed they were providing financial assistance to build a $5 billion Stelantis/LG battery plant in Windsor, but haven’t said how much taxpayer funds are going into that plant.
“Northern Ontario now will be included in the auto sector for the first time in 120 years with critical minerals processing, the production of lithium hydroxide for lithium ion batteries.” Volkswagen has previously announced two gigafactories, one in Salzgitter, Germany and another in Valencia, Spain.
