Roderick Deon, 101, and his wife Frances, 93, met at a military parade just before he shipped out for World War II. The war is long since over but the couple's love lives on.

The couple would write letters to each other while Roderick served in England and France.

Roderick never shared in his letters how he survived enemy bullets, the smoke from the firing of guns, overhead planes dropping bombs like “a thunderstorm in the clouds,” U-boats, and massive enemy raids.Years later, Roderick would begin to unveil these haunting images and admit he is “lucky” to be alive while sharing some of his harrowing escapes.

Roderick is one of the last surviving Canadian Navy veterans to serve at Normandy Beach on D-Day in what became known as the largest seaborne invasion in history. “We often travelled to Florida, the Bahamas, and one month in Australia while my son was there. So, we did a lot of travelling, bringing us together and out of our comfort zone,” shares Frances, while acknowledging they “lived in the moment.”

Laura Prior, their homecare worker, says the two often can be seen poking each other with their inside jokes, which shows how comfortable they are with each other, and they never stray far from each other’s side.
