St. Demetrius welcomes community donations to meet families' 'many, many needs': St. Demetrius principal
Odarka Yekchlakov and her son, Myron, 7, who is being treated for leukemia at SickKids, observed Christmas in Canada without their husband and father, Myhailo, who is fighting back home in the Zaporizhzia region of Ukraine.
“Myron was happy at the bomb shelter; he had children to play with,” Yekchlakov said. “Most of his life, he’s been in hospital. He couldn’t play in the playground. He was isolated.” They arrived at an urgent care hospital in Lviv in western Ukraine, but Myron only needed regular checkups. “It’s difficult, but I’m very proud of him,” Yekchlakov said of her husband. “He’s waiting for victory.”
“It’s like a family here at the school. Myron loves school. He’s very curious. He’s settled here. He loves it here. For me, that’s the biggest thing.”This year, St. DemetriusRELATED STORIES“I’ll get more portables if I have to,” Hordienko said. “I anticipate we’ll get more students this winter. No one anticipated the war would still be going on. Back home, they have no electricity, no heat.”
