In announcing re-election campaign that could see the oldest ever U.S. president in the White House, Biden says he wants to finish the ‘battle for the soul of America’
U.S. President Joe Biden has formally launched his bid for a second term with a broadside at “MAGA extremists,” kicking off the country’s marathon 2024 election race and setting up a potential rematch with Donald Trump.video posted online“The question we’re facing is whether in the years ahead, we have more freedom or less freedom, more rights or fewer,” he says in the clip, over a montage of himself and Vice-President Kamala Harris meeting voters across the country.
“Around the country, MAGA extremists are lining up to take on those bedrock freedoms: cutting social security that you paid for your entire life while cutting taxes of the very wealthy; dictating what healthcare decisions women can make; banning books; and telling people who they can love – all while making it more difficult for you to be able to vote,” Mr. Biden says in the voiceover.
In a statement Monday night pre-empting Mr. Biden’s announcement, Mr. Trump accused Mr. Biden of opening the U.S. border with Mexico, and railed against both “left-wing freaks and zealots” and “woke” military officers. A bland, 80-year-old career politician, Mr. Biden has largely sold himself as a safe, conciliatory figure after four years of Mr. Trump’s drama. He has earned plaudits for rallying international support against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine – directing tens of billions of dollars in military aid to Kyiv – and passing major legislation to build infrastructure and fight climate change.
Despite these drawbacks, Democrats appear to have concluded there is no other viable figure who can hold together the big-tent coalition of progressives, centrists and some anti-Trump Republicans that delivered the White House in 2020. The only other contenders for the Democratic nomination are longshots: anti-vaccine activist Robert Kennedy Jr. and self-help author Marianne Williamson.
Although the re-election campaign seemed all but inevitable from that point, it continued to draw doubts, particularly given Mr. Biden’s age. By officially entering the race, he will now be able to start fundraising and hiring staff, who are likely to be based in Mr. Biden’s hometown of Wilmington, Del.
