Former U.S. president Donald Trump is set to surrender to face criminal charges in a historic arraignment in New York City on Tuesday, but is doing so defiantly.
The Associated PressFormer U.S. president Donald Trump arraignedTrump, the first former U.S. president to be indicted, learns about the charges he faces in New York case.
The booking and appearance before Judge Juan Merchan should be relatively brief — though hardly routine — as Trump learns for the first time the charges against him. Trump will plead not guilty, according to his lawyers, and is expected to enter the plea himself, as is standard in the court. Trump was indicted last week, becoming the first sitting or former president to face criminal charges, over a case involving a 2016 hush money payment to Stephanie Clifford, known as the porn performer Stormy Daniels.Trump lawyer Joe Tacopina said in an interview Tuesday that Trump wouldn't plead guilty to lesser charges, even if it might resolve the case.
Trump used his social media network Truth Social on Tuesday morning to complain that he was going to court in a heavily Democratic area, declaring, "KANGAROO COURT" and "THIS IS NOT WHAT AMERICA WAS SUPPOSED TO BE!"The Manhattan grand jury that indicted Trump heard evidence for months earlier this year about a $130,000 US payment to Daniels in the waning days of the 2016 presidential campaign.
