Trudeau hinted that Biden’s visit could lead to a possible announcement but his ministers working on the file said conversations are ongoing
“What I can say is that we’re working on a solution that will not just deal with political issues that may be in the news over the next few days, but will provide an actual lasting solution,” said Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, on Wednesday.Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said she “respects” what the Prime Minister said but there would be more discussions with the Biden administration on the issue in the next few days.
Canada and the United States have been discussing for months possible changes to the Safe Third Country Agreement. The deal, in effect since 2004, creates an obligation for people seeking refugee protection to make a claim in the first country they arrive in. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has echoed calls from Quebec premier Francois Legault in asking the Trudeau government to close Roxham Road, whereas the NDP and the Bloc Quebecois would rather see a suspension of the Safe Third Country Agreement.
