Beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, a parade of contenders for the city’s top job streamed into a ground-floor office to submit their nomination papers.
Bradford’s two-year-old daughter Briar looked longingly through the office’s window at the playground next to city hall as her dad submitted his papers, while 10-year-old Molly Matlow quietly clutched her father’s arm as he fielded journalists’ questions.
“It’s never been more expensive, less safe, or more difficult to get around this city,” he said, accusing council of wasting time debating issues like whether to rename the SmartTrack transit plan, instead of fixing problems that matter to residents. Matlow promised to create a “livable, safe and affordable city,” and reverse the deterioration of city services like snow clearing, park bathrooms and road maintenance. To pay for it, he’s proposed a two-per-cent tax to generate revenue for a “city works fund.”
