Dong said in a written statement on Monday that he plans to take unspecified legal action to defend himself against allegations he claims are false.
OTTAWA—Han Dong, the Independent MP for Don Valley North, says he has hired a lawyer and plans to take unspecified legal action against a broadcaster that reported stories that he claims falsely questioned his loyalty to Canada. He declined an interview request from the Star, and did not say whether — or when — he might give formal notice of any legal action.
Global News also reported in February that Dong was a “witting affiliate” in Beijing’s attempts to help him secure the Liberal party’s nomination to run in Don Valley North in the 2019 federal election. He says he has received “” since the reports were published, but that Canadian intelligence officials, police and elections authorities have never contacted him about alleged Chinese interference.
He added that he is willing to meet with former governor general David Johnston, who has been appointed by the federal government as a “special rapporteur” to look into the interference allegations and decide if a public inquiry is necessary. This experience pushed Dong’s father to bring his family to Canada in 1990, Dong wrote in his statement Monday. The resulting “trauma” in his family is one reason Dong said he “took every available opportunity” to advocate for the release of Spavor and Kovrig during their imprisonment in China.
