National Newswatch: Canada's most comprehensive site for political news and views. Make it a daily habit.
Today is one of the saddest dates on the Canadian political history calendar; each year on this date we mark the passing of two of our 23 Prime Ministers.
On this date in 1893 Sir John Abbott, the PM who succeeded the great Sir John A. Macdonald — in the process becoming the first Canadian-born Prime Minister — passed into history. Canada’s 3rd prime minister, he served as PM for 17 months in 1891-92, retiring due to ill health. Also on this date, in 1915, Prime Minister Sir Charles Tupper entered the great Parliament in the sky. Tupper, a Father of Confederation, had served as premier of Nova Scotia, before moving onto service in various federal portfolios including as Minister of Finance, and High Commissioner to the UK before a three month stint as prime minister.we remember our third and sixth Prime Ministers, distinguished public servants in our nation’s earliest days.
