Canada’s Father of Confederation, the great Sir John A. Macdonald, was at his political lowest on this date in 1873. Only days before, he and his government had been forced out of office because of their involvement in the infamous Pacific Scandal. Sir John A. and his party had been caught red-handed accepting bribes from railway interests to fund their successful 1872 campaign.
And yes indeed, after five years in the wilderness, Macdonald would again return to office as Prime Minister in 1878. As you will see upon reading his speech to his supporters on this date in 1873, his comeback was already underway.: Mr.
There is a sect, a most respectable sect, of religionists that came in old times from the East, and still exists—those who worship the rising sun only. You are not Parsons, gentlemen. You can say with the poet— “Let others hail the rising sun, We bow to that whose course is run.”* The other side were disappointed; my own constituents were very naturally disappointed at the choice. The very next session of Parliament, a gentleman from the district of Montreal, actuated by the desire, of course, to aid his section, moved in Parliament that Ottawa was not a fit place for the seat of Government. The Ministry, of which I was a member, voted against that resolution as one man, because if it were carried, we considered it would be an insult to Her Majesty.
I say this, not by way of boast, but simply as a very interesting reminiscence, as a bond of connection between myself and my political friends and the city of Ottawa, which, I hope will never be severed. We have received our reward, and it is a pleasure to me, because, sometimes, good deeds do not get their reward in this world. Not only in this social assembly, but in the confidence, in the sympathy, in the warm approbation and happy support not only of Ottawa, but of the surrounding district, have I found my reward at once. If I have cast my bread upon the waters, it has returned at once, and not after many days.
