Queen Elizabeth had been on the throne for less than seven days when Tommy Douglas took to his feet in the Saskatchewan Legislature on this date in 1952 to celebrate Canada’s new Monarch. A strong monarchist throughout his distinguished life and career, Douglas had in fact attended the wedding of then Princess Elizabeth in 1947 in London. He had previously welcomed the young Princess to his province in 1951.
