A group of young people had their speaking contest judged by one of Canada’s greatest parliamentary performers, Arthur Meighen, on this date in 1937. The students were members of the Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Ottawa.

In public speaking as in all other tasks in life the first thing to keep in mind is the object to be attained. The object of public speaking is to convince, and all other desires should be subordinated to this one great aim—to persuade your audience to your own way of thinking. I have no thought of indicating to young people that their sentences may be ill-constructed or that their order may be illogical. An ill-constructed sentence or faulty logic reacts on the speaker himself. It tends to confuse and to discourage. The place to get in the habit of constructing one’s sentences properly and moving rationally from one point to another in argument is in ordinary conversation.
