Today in Canada’s Political History: An unhinged John Diefenbaker berates the American Ambassador | National Newswatch:
Canadian-American relations sunk to their lowest on this date in 1962. American Ambassador to Canada, Livingston Merchant, visited Prime Minister John Diefenbaker at 24 Sussex for what he thought was a courtesy 15-minute farewell call. What he found instead, however, was a Canadian Prime Minister displaying political, and perhaps even mental instability, at a level unheard of in the bilateral relations between our two nations.
For upwards of two hours Diefenbaker threatened the American government. He berated the USA’s representative over the perceived pro-Liberal and pro-Lester Pearson bias displayed by President John F. Kennedy and his Administration. Dief even went so far to threaten the Americans he would make public a memo sent to Kennedy that had been inadvertently left behind in the PM’s private office when the President had visited Ottawa in 1961.
“The gist of what the Prime Minister said was this,” Ambassador Merchant reported back to Washington in an urgent memo he wrote about the bizarre experience with Dief. “He could only interpret the President’s devoting so much time to a personal talk with Pearson … as an intervention by the President in the Canadian election ….
