KATHY JOHNSONBARRINGTON, N.S. — After a two-year absence due to COVID, Ducks Unlimited Canada dinners and auctions are back on the calendar in southwestern Nova Scotia.
“Our education program is something I’m very proud of,” said DUC outreach specialist and volunteer Katie Scott during the supper and auction in Barrington. The field trip includes a bus subsidy and resource kits for all the students. In Shelburne County, the Shelburne County ATV Association and the Woodland Multi-Use Trails Association partner with DUC to help deliver the program.
“The conservation team has been working hard over the last two years in securing some very important saltwater marsh habitat along the south shore,” said Scott. “Last year alone there were two new projects. One in Argyle Head, over 320 acres protected and one in Charlesville closer to 70 acres, so we protected 400 acres last year with these two purchases alone.”
In partnership with the province of Nova Scotia, DUC also has a Treasured Wetlands of Nova Scotia program. Locally, there are two designated treasured wetlands. In Shelburne County, Swaine Bog in the Municipality of Barrington was one of the first wetlands to be designated because of the rare and endangered thread-leaved sundew that grows there.
For the third year in a row, Shelburne County DUC volunteer Angele Scott was named Volunteer of the Year for Nova Scotia at the Barrington event.
