Of the 62 firearms destined for the streets, 58 were traceable back to their beginnings, and of those 57 came from the United States. The lone remaining traceable firearm had its origins in Canada, a firearm reported stolen by a legal gun owner.
In yet another gun trafficking bust by the Toronto Police Service — this one dubbed “Project Barbell” — one statistic jumped out.
“I am extremely confident and can say without reservation that this particular investigation has absolutely increased the level of public safety,” said Watts, with the service’s organized crime enforcement unit, of an eight-month probe that “focused on an armed criminal network.” Police initially focused on two individuals and, in executing a series of search warrants in east Toronto, seized the firearms, which included three “AK-type” rifles, one of them loaded with 61 rounds of ammunition; five “AR 15-type” rifles; 51 semi-automatic handguns, as well as 31 magazines, 132 rounds of ammunition and two stolen luxury vehicles, which were fraudulently registered.
