A doctor registry for the entirety of Atlantic Canada is coming, or at the very least has been promised by the premiers. What will it's implementation mean? This Nova Scotia authority who's been a longtime advocate for the program explains.

HALIFAX, N.S. — A few weeks ago, an agreement was announced that would allow licensed doctors to move freely between the Atlantic Provinces. Dr. Gus Grant says it likely won’t have a huge impact on recruitment or retention. But the Nova Scotia College of Physicians and Surgeons CEO says this latest move might. The licensing and regulatory body is the first in Canada to recognize credentials of US licensed doctors without extra certification.

The other two constituencies affected by this are likely young physicians fresh out of training. Because it's increasingly the norm for young physicians to want to explore, try different practice settings. To do what we call locum practice, move about try to figure out where they wish to set down, and they should be they should be encouraged permitted to do that.

And what we've done with this decision is bypass the role of the Royal College and said, We're not going to require you to challenge those exams or obtain Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons certification. And I expect we'll get some blowback from physicians in Nova Scotia, who are proud of and appropriately proud of their royal college certification. And of course, it goes without saying we won't be popular with the Royal College as well.

You know, as an example, there's a Ukrainian radiologist who's seeking licensure. And her postgraduate training after medical school was one year of residency. The Canadian radiologist does five or seven years of training. Would you be comfortable having your ….we have to be measured. So, the extraordinary thing is the range of medical training around the world.
